PREMIER LEAGUE

‘AIR QUALITY TABLE’

In 2023 we created the 'Air Pollution League Table', ranking teams on the air quality recorded at home stadiums.

The research measured the presence of three toxic pollutants that can cause asthma, respiratory inflammation, strokes, promote cancers, and even lead to miscarriage.

Of 60 total measurements recorded, only one was within safe guidelines set out by the World Health Organisation.

Newcastle United came out top. Brentford, Tottenham and Chelsea were relegated.

David Wheeler, PFA Sustainability Champion and Wycombe Wanderers midfielder, said; "These findings show clearly why we must address air pollution. Not only does poor air quality affect a players’ ability to perform at their best in a match, it has the potential to cause some serious health issues too for players and fans."

"But the good news is that football has incredible power to drive change. By raising awareness of the issue and taking action as clubs, as leagues and in our individual lives, we can make sure our air is cleaner, our bodies are healthier and our teams play better."

WSL

‘AIR QUALITY TABLE’

Our research on WSL teams showed that Liverpool are top of the table and Tottenham are bottom.

Of 36 measurements, none were within the safe guidelines set out by the World Health Organisation.

Diane Caldwell of Reading and Ireland gave us her thoughts: "It's scary to see the results of the Air Pollution WSL League Table and that every single WSL stadium is over The World Health Organisation's recommended limit for three toxic pollutants.""

“Air pollution isn't something that you would even think about before a match but these toxic pollutants can cause respiratory problems, strokes, cancers and even lead to miscarriages. For the safety of players' and fans' health it's something that we really need to look at and address as a football community."
